We aim at enhancing biodiversity through expansion of community-led reforestation; integrating agroforestry, farmer-managed natural regeneration, conservation, and improvement of livelihoods of the local people particularly, women and youths through adaptive beekeeping (Apiary), a sustainable and alternative income generating activity with the potential to significantly reduce pressure on biodiversity in these islands in the long term.
Highly threatened indigenous trees; African mahogany (Khaya anthotheca), Drum tree (Cordia millenii), and Brown Mahogany (Lovoa swynnertonii) are of high intrinsic value. These trees have become very rare and endangered in Buvuma islands, while the African Mahogany (Khaya anthotheca) is Vulnerable according to IUCN Red List. These species are native to these Islands in Lake Victoria, and of great importance to the environment, the community for boat making, firewood, timber, and other cultural values.
